The gun can read. It cannot understand.

A barcode gun is an excellent keyboard: it types a number into a field, fast. But it does not know if that is milk or a shoe, does not add up quantities, and does not remember who pulled the trigger. We will keep your gun. We will add everything else.

Where it breaks

Three familiar moments, and what happens here instead.

"What is 7290000010005?"

The day ends with a file of thousands of numbers. Now someone cross-references them against the catalog, by hand.

Identified the second it beeps.

Name, photo and price on screen at the moment of the scan. There is no decoding step, because there is nothing to decode.

"Did we scan 30 or 300?"

The gun writes a row per squeeze. Quantities get counted afterwards with a COUNTIF and some hope.

The quantity adds itself up.

Twenty scans of one item are one row saying 20. What the screen shows is what the shelf holds.

"The gun passed through five hands."

When a number comes out odd, there is no way to know who scanned it or in which zone.

Everyone scans from their own account.

The gun pairs with the worker's phone, and every scan is recorded under their name, in the location where they stood.

What it looks like here

The same beep, but now it means something.

The scan screen shows every item with a photo, name, code and a quantity that updates. Your gun keeps working exactly as before, except this time something is listening.

In fairness

When a bare gun is enough

If another system already manages the stock and you only feed it barcodes, a gun in keyboard mode does that. The comparison matters when the goal is a count, a receipt or control, and then you need a system that understands what was scanned.

The gun is a good tool. Give it a system that understands it, and it becomes a solution.
